Making null effects informative using Bayes factors and equivalence tests
Просмотров 2062 месяца назад
Publication bias, in which non-significant results are less likely to be published, is a considerable issue for many areas of psychology. At least within a hypothetico-deductive framework, the capacity to falsify a hypothesis is critical for testing predictions. Thus, one contributing factor to publication bias is that traditional frequentist p-values cannot be used to provide evidence for the ...

Improving intranasal oxytocin research by advancing methods, theory, and reproducibility
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
The neuropeptide oxytocin has garnered considerable interest for its role in social behavior and its potential for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses characterised by social dysfunction, such as autism. However, initial excitement has largely turned to disappointment with some studies failing to replicate earlier results, which has been attributed to issues related to research methods, mech...

How preprints can benefit both science and your career
Просмотров 2872 года назад
In this talk I share how preprints can benefit both science and your career, along with some practical tips on how to get started. I also address some common concerns about preprints, like whether journals accept papers that have been preprinted and if this increases the risk of scooping (Hint: it doesn't. In fact, it *protects* you against scooping). Slides are available here: osf.io/qcv4h/

Increasing the credibility of meta-analysis
Просмотров 6742 года назад
Several scientific fields are experiencing a reproducibility crisis, in which hypothesis-driven studies are failing to replicate. Poor reproducibility has been linked to several factors, but some of the most pertinent issues are analytical flexibility and lack of transparency. While these issues are becoming more well-known for primary research, it has received less attention for meta-analysis....
How to calculate the statistical power of studies included in a meta-analysis using R
Просмотров 1 тыс.2 года назад
Several methods exist for assessing study quality in meta-analysis, but these are typically discipline specific. One approach used across disciplines to assess the evidential value of an individual study is to calculate its statistical power, which can identify the range of effect sizes that can be reliably detected. Studies with low statistical power are more likely to yield false positives an...

This is not accurate information. Testosterone does not raise oxytocin, it does the opposite. It suppresses the receptors and can decrease oxytocin. This can explain why many men are not into cuddling after intimacy.

First of all, thank you for the video, Daniel! I have a question tho regarding the dependent effect sizes. As you demonstrated, it is possible to account for this dependency using the robu() function, but what should the workflow look like? How should I follow up with other procedures such as finding the influential studies, plotting a forest plot, test for bias and so on? Or do I do the meta-analysis as if all the effect sizes are independent and only use the robu function to see if the results are robust? Thank you in advance for your time!

Dear Daniel, thank you so much for the video. I think it would be better if you take it more specify, e.g., this function is applied to random-effect or fix-effect model. Because the function for these 2 model is different and the result will also be varied a lot.

Hey, thank you for your video. I was planing on using Hedge's g random effects for my meta-analysis, and the data I am using is pre and post therapy outcome measures. What data do I use when conducting a mean difference analysis on Jamovi when the data is pre and post therapy outcome measures scores for a intervention group and control group? Do I figure out the mean difference for the intervention and the pooled standard deviation and then use that?

Can I ask you please, have you got a video about conducting a meta-analysis using confidence intervals? Also, in this video you said that study 3 had an effect size of .23. Could you be more specific please? In the forest plot it shows -2.32. Were you referring to the first 2 digits? Thank you, Marcus.

Hi, thank you for your videos! They have been extremely useful. In a different video you say that the weight function attributes more weight to studies that are less likely to be published (p>0.05) and less weight to those more likely to be published (p<0.05) thus balancing them for the adjusted function. However, I got the idea from other sources of information that it does the opposite. That it imprints the publication bias mechanism into the function by attributing more weight to the more likely to be published (p<0.05) and less weight to the less likely to be published (p>0.05). This way, if the adjusted function is a better fit to our data it actually means that we might have publication bias. Can you comment this please? Am I misinterpreting your last video?
